BIRDING IN LANZAROTE (CANARY ISLANDS)

Saturday, June 16, 2007 - MAY 2007 LANZAROTE REPORT

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

On may 2007, four new species have been added to our personal island´s list: Gull-billed Tern (1 bird I saw at Arrecife on 20/V), European Roller (1 bird at Arrecife on 19, 21 and 22/V and 1 bird at Teguise golf course at least on 20/V, with birds at Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria too), Whinchat (many birds at Yaiza, Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife on 09 and 10/V) and Sedge Warbler (1 bird I saw at Arrecife on 13/V).

About another interesting migrants, Squacco Heron (1 bird I saw at Puerto del Carmen on 14/V), White Storks have been at Zonzamas rubbish dump, Tahiche and Arrecife all month and at least 7 birds have remained into June, presumed Eurasian Marsh Harrier (1 bird at Los Ancones on 22/V), Common Moorhen (1 bird at Arrecife on 1, 2, 4/V and 2 birds at Puerto del Carmen on 24 and 25/V), Red Knot (1 bird at Los Cocoteros salt pans on 02/V), Little Stint (1 bird in summer plumage at Los Cocoteros salt pans on 16/V), Common Snipe (1 bird at Teguise golf course on 16/V), Alpine Swift (1 bird at La Concha beach on 12/V) and the spectacular passage of migrating passerines that started on 09/V with the east weather with dust from Africa. It brought (apart many Whinchats and the Sedge Warbler): Sand Martin, Barn Swallow, Red-rumped Swallow, House Martin, Tree Pipit, Yellow Wagtail, Common Nightingale (1 bird I saw at Puerto del carmen on 09/V), Common Redstart, Melodious Warbler, Common Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, Wood Warbler, Willow Warbler, Spotted Flycatcher (hundreds), Pied Flycatcher (including some males in summer plumage), Eurasian Golden Oriole (1 bird I saw at Puerto del Carmen on 15/V) and Woodchat Shrike (1 bird I saw at El Cable sands on 11/V).

About rarities, is interesting the adult male feldegg Yellow Wagtail seen by Juan Sagardía at Alegranza on 23 or 24/V, but no shots could be taken.

This trip to Alegranza, with a visit to the sea off the islet on 23/V, brought some interesting observations on seabirds like Little Shearwater or European Storm-petrel.

Another interesting observations on breeding birds was Egyptian Vulture (1 bird seen from Tahiche-Guatiza road on 02/V), the first Eleonora´s Falcons of the year, with birds at Teguise plains and Los Ancones, and Kentish Plover nesting at La Santa, Arrecife, Los Cocoteros and Janubio, and Black-winged Stilts nesting at Janubio.
