BIRDING IN LANZAROTE (CANARY ISLANDS)

Wednesday, August 8, 2007 - JUNE-JULY 2007 LANZAROTE REPORT

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

During June and July 2007, two new species have been added to our personal list of birds observed in Lanzarote: Manx Shearwater (1 bird seen by Juan Sagardía sea off Alegranza on 07/VII) and Black-bellied Sandgrouse (1 adult male seen at Los Ancones on 08/VII).

About breeding birds, the most remarkable were the observations of Egyptian Vulture, Houbara Bustard and Cream-coloured Courser at Los Ancones, Eleonora´s Falcons at Arrecife and Mala and the juveniles Black-winged Stilts at Janubio.

About scarce migrants, the most interesting observations were: Black-crowned Night Heron (1 inmature bird at Mala on 08/VII), Squacco Heron (1 bird seen by A. Unquiles at La Santa on 02/VI), White Stork (at least 7 birds have remained into August) and Common Tern (1 bird I saw at Puerto Calero on 04/VI). The observations of 1 Melodious Warbler at Mala reservoir (29/VII) and 1 Willow Warbler at Janubio on 01/VI were interesting too.
