April 22, 2006 - reel around the fountain

A reeling grasshopper warbler at Galley this morning was new for the patch year list, as were 5 sand martins and 2 male blackcaps (87).  Also present were c.15 willow warblers, 3 chiffchaffs and 1 whimbrel. Four bottlenose dolphins were off Long Strand early this morning, heading west.

lucked out on the FEC and it was dead quiet. Very strange considering there is plenty of stuff moving through elsewhere. 16 Shelduck were a surprise. Mongolian Plover, Red-necked stint, turnstone, whimbrel and grey=tailed tatler were the hightlights. Disappointing considering the time of year. Nice one on the gropper. We had singing Oriental Reed Warblers today, the first of the spring...

i thought i had one of them today too but it was just a whitethroat. Collared dove was a goodie though - funny how patch listing can get you punching the sky over such a crap species but hey - i spose thats the beauty of it!

nae luck with the fec - mebbe next time - was it a one off or do they come through regular? i'm sure you'll find one before you leave fella!
