There have been recent sightings of large numbers of little egrets in CWP. 24 were sighted in flooded fields by the railway line(SU081946) and I saw a group of 6 in flooded fields near Cricklade recently. Are numbers increasing greatly and if so why is this?

Go to Bird Track at http://www.bto.org/birdtrack/ and do a search of the animated maps for little egret between Jan 2006 and Dec 2006 and you can see how they increase during certain seasons. You might be surprised how widespread they are. They have been increasing rapidly having got over the channel a few years ago. Certainly the south coast is packed with them in places and the population will naturally expand to fill in around the country.
