Wader Scrapes, Cleveland Lakes (Lakes 74/68a), Cotswold Water Park

The new wader scrapes on Lake 74, Cleveland Lakes, are currently only partially completed. The Cotswold Water Park Society is waiting for Aggregate Industries to complete broad-scale landscaping, including the scrapes, before our own contractors can complete the fine-scale habitat creation, installation of water control structures etc.

Last week, we began to lower water levels within the scrapes, to improve ground conditions, prior to Aggregate Industries beginning works again. Clearly this has benefitted migrant waders with numerous excellent sightings over the weekend.

Aggregate Industries may commence earth movements on the scrapes in coming weeks to complete the landscaping here. At present, they have not given an exact time for when these works may begin.

Ground conditions on the scrapes is poor, with extensive areas of soft deep mud, crumbling edges and deep water. It is not safe to enter this area on foot so please do not do so. It is still a construction site.  Please observe this area from Twitchers Gate or from the new footpaths on the southern edge of Lake 68a; approaching too closely will likely flush birds anyway, so please do not cause unnecessary disturbance.

Please bear with us whilst we complete these works; we plan to install hides overlooking the new scrapes as soon as we can.

Any questions or queries, please let me know. Gareth Harris, Biodiversity Officer, Cotswold Water Park Society.
