• Tuesday, March 24, 2009 - Cocoi Heron & Summer Plumaged Hudsonian Godwits

I went out to Kelp Point this afternoon with Andy Clark, John Croxall & Stig Tore Lunde. At Island Harbour house we came across a juvenile Red Backed Hawk.

On the pond at Pleasant roads there were Black Necked Swans, Speckled Teals, Silver Teals, Chiloe Wigeons, Yellow Billed Pintail & Silvery Grebe.

The pond at Kelp Point has completely dried up so there was no wildfowl on it, just White Rumped Sandpiper, Rufous Chested Dotterel & Two Banded Plover on the mud and around the edge.

We had a look for Coscoroba Swans on the sea by the pond but no sign, but did see some Commerson’s Dolphins playing and hunting in the shallows.

At the beach at Kelp Point there were no sign of any Hudsonian Godwits just lots of Southern Elephant Seals.

We then headed down to Whale point to see if any were on the beach there, when we approached a Cocoi Heron (Rare vagrant) took off from the beach and headed down the coast. On the beach there were 4 Hudsonian Godwits, 2 of which were in full summer plumage.

It is a real treat to keep in touch with the Falklands via your wonderful photos, especially to see what has been about since 1st Jan in the Kelp Point area. The summer plumaged godwits are lovely. Also great to see the growing Coscoroba swan cygnets on the sea (5th Feb). Best wishes to you and your family.

Hi Alan
It was great to be guided by you on my visit to Falkland islands. The visit to Fitzroy was an exclusive one.
Our visit to SG was successful. To have support from John and Andy was exellent. I am going to put together my images in two albums. Then I´ll e-mail you.

Best regards
Stig Tore Lunde
