• Saturday, October 24, 2009 - Cliff Swallow - Very Rare Vagrant

I went out to Cape Pembroke lighthouse this afternoon, just after we arrived at the point a Cliff Swallow Hirundo pyrrhonta flew past the car. I managed to get onto it straight away and watch it for about 30 seconds before it was lost to sight. Cliff Swallows are very rare vagrants to the Falkland Islands with the odd bird being seen every few years. Unfortunately it was not possible to get pictures of the bird.

Below is an image of the last Cliff Swallow that I saw in 2005.

Hopefully it will turn up again and the other birders in Stanley will get to enjoy it.
