• Sunday, October 25, 2009 - White Banded Mockingbird - First Falklands Record

Yesterday I got a call from Lorraine McGill on Carcass Island to say that her husband Rob had found a strange bird in the hut at the airstrip, unfortunately it was found dead. Lorraine had looked in one of her bird books and had identified it as a White Banded Mockingbird Mimus Triurus.

Today I received the corpse of the bird and Lorraine was correct in her identification of the bird as a White Banded Mockingbird Mimus Triurus. This represents the first record of this species in the Falkland Islands.

Where are these normally found, do you know? It sounds like a North American bird.

Polly,
About 700 miles away in Argentina is the nearest they are to the Falkland Islands. In North America you get the Northern Mockingbird.

He is simply beautiful. I love the way the white seems to drip down his feathers, as if painted on. Thanks for sharing.
