Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Sunday, March 4, 2007 - 26th - 29th January 2007

The next  four days we will be staying on Carcass Island this magical rat and cat free island is owned and managed by Rob McGill

One of the days we will do a boat trip over to West Point Island.

With Carcass Island being a cat and rat free island it is teeming with small birds that have no fear of man

Female Black Chinned Siskin

Male Black Chinned Siskin

Male Black Throated Finch

Cobb's Wren one of two endemic species to be found in the Falkland Islands, they are only on cat and rat free islands like Carcass

Tussac Bird like the Cobb's Wren thrives on cat and rat free Islands.

All around the house are Striated Caracara's of all ages but mostly young birds looking to get into trouble, these birds always remind me of young teenagers.

Young bird with a lot to say

A small group hanging around, note the crop is visible on a couple of the birds.

Also in the Falklands we have Southern Caracara normally a lot more shy than the Striated Caracara but on Carcass there is a young Southern that is very tame and waits outside the house for scraps.
