Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Monday, March 5, 2007 - 26th - 29th January 2007 (3)

Toady we head to the North West of the Island to have a look at some Southern Elephant Seals also in this area there is a large Gull colony with both Kelp Gull and Dolphin Gulls. We have a quick look at the colony to see that it has been a good breeding year for them as most have two chicks.

We have a look on a pond by the Gull colony to look for Flying Steamer Duck that I had seen on there in November 2006. A quick scan reveals a pair with two young. Also on the pond there are Patagonian Crested Duck, Speckled Teal with young with 1000's of Upland & Rudy Headed geese around the edge

We carry on to the beach where the Southern Elephant Seals are, a complete walk along about 2 miles of beach gives us a count of 132 animals. two of them are tagged animals from a project in Argentina.
