Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Friday, March 9, 2007 - 8th March 2007 Minke Whale

Went around to Berkeley Sound in the afternoon to visit a reefer vessel that had just arrived, it was flat carm so a good chance to see if any of the Sei & Minke Whales were about.

Lots of Black Browed Albatross sitting on the water some this years fledged birds that seem to be very early.

Saw a group of Southern Fur Seal in the distance so slowed the launch down, they came up to us to have a look at us. These are quite scarce in large groups around this part of the Falklands.

On the way back out of Berkeley Sound went to have a look to see if any Sooty Shearwaters were gathering to come ashore to Kidney Island home to about 25,000+ pairs. Still a little early in the afternoon but there were still about a thousand birds aready gathering.

Finally at the entarance to Berkeley Sound we had brief but very good views of a single Minke Whale.
