Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Thursday, March 29, 2007 - 28th March 2007 White Rumped Sandpipers

Managed a couple of hours birding by the coast this afternoon just outside of Stanley. Went to the same location where I saw both Chilean and Barn Swallows together last year on this date. No surprise to find no swallows but quite a lot of different species of birds feeding off flies on the rotten Kelp.

Nice flocks of both White Rumped Sandpipers and Rufous Chested Dotterels

Most of the White Rumped Sandpipers will be leaving in the next few weeks. Last year 2 juv birds spent the whole winter near Stanley the first time I have seen this in the 20 years that I have lived here.

The Rufous Chested Dotterels are all now in their winter plumage and will be getting ready to migrate to mainland South America. Small numbers stay around the Falklands during winter.

Other Birds feeding around the rotten Kelp included Falkland Thrush, Dark Faced Ground Tyrant and a pair of Long Tailed Meadowlarks

Out a sea a family of Peale's Dolphins swam past just a I was about to leave a nice finish to a couple of hours birding.
