Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Sunday, April 29, 2007 - 28th April 2007 Cape Pembroke

Managed to get a few hours birding in today around Cape Pembroke lighthouse area, It started off very good with a Tussac Bird flying up to me soon after I started walking along the South beach also around this area I saw a couple of pairs of Long Tailed Meadowlarks, Black Chinned Siskin, Falkland Thrush, Falkland Pipit, Grass Wren and a few Dark faced Ground Tyrants feeding on flys on the kelp.

Rufous Chested Dotterels have increased to 19 birds with them still being here now it looks as though they will be staying the winter.

Both Magellanic & Blackish Oystercatchers were on the rocks with their young from this year.

Young Blackish Oystercatcher

Young Magellanic Oysttercatcher

Around the lighthouse there were lots of Snowy Sheathbills out on the rocks the first I have seen this winter so far.

Then I saw a lone Rockhopper Penguin on the rocks when I went down for a closer look to see if it was oK I could see it was just finishing this years moult

Also on the rocks I saw the below Sub Antarctic Fur Seal, only the second one I have seen in the Falkland Islands this is a very rare visiter from Gough Island.

At the end of the day I had seen 30 species of birds and 3 species of mammals not bad for a winters day in the Falklands
