Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Thursday, May 3, 2007 - 2nd May 2007 Southern & Northern Giant Petrels

Today in Berkeley Sound saw some large groups of Giant Petrels on the sea, on closer inspection could see that there were lots of Northern Giant Petrels in the groups

Northern Giant Petrel is a non breeding visiter to the Falkland Islands they can be seen all year round but are much more numerous in the autumn.

Also in one of the groups was the white Southern Giant Petrel that has been about for a week or so.

White phased birds are only found in Southern Giant Petrels and in the census that took place in the Falkland Islands a couple of years ago no white phased birds were found to be breeding in the 20,000+ pairs of Southern Giant Petrels that do breed in the Falkland Islands
