Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Monday, September 3, 2007 - Barn Owl & Sea Trout

Went sea trout fishing today on the Pedro River about an hour and halfs drive from Stanley, on the way came across this suberb dark phased male Red Backed Hawk on a road sign

Further along the road there was a pair of Southern Caracara with last years young. There is a real feel of Spring in the air at the moment with lots of Rufous Chested Dotteral back with some cracking males doing there slow wing cracking display flights.

Had a quick look around Teal Inlet farm plenty of Falkland Pipit, Falkland Thrush, Black Chinned Siskin and Dark faced Ground Tyrants around, then went up to the stable to see if the Barn Owl was about sure enougn there he was sitting on the cross beam.

Finally got to the river and was very surprised to see a pair of South American Terns feeding in the shallows, they are back a little bit earlier than normal a sure sign that Spring is on its way.

Lots of Speckled Teal, Rudy Headed Goose and Upland Gosse defending territories along the river as well as a pair of White Tufted Grebe.

A very good day was ended with fresh Sea-trout for supper!!!
