Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Sunday, September 16, 2007 - Magellanic Penguins

Out birding today in superb weather with no wind and bright sunshine with no cloud cover, first down to Gypsy Cove to see if any Magellanic Penguins are back, no sign there but there were a couple of Magellanic Peguins at a colony that is on the South coast just out side Stanley in a minefield.

Came across this female Red Backed Hawk feeding on a road killed Upland Goose

She was soon joined by the male, this pair nest just outside Stanley and have successfully raised young for the last few years.

Next a look down at Cape Pembroke on the way there were lots of Rufous Chested Dotteral, Falkland Pipit, Dark Faced Ground Tyrant, Long Tailed Meadowlarks, Turkey Vultures and a Peregrine Falcon, at the point quite a few Grass Wrens around the lighthouse and Magellanic & Blackish Oystercatchers on the rocks with a small flock of Snowy Sheathbills. On the way back came a cross a pair of Falkland Thrushes collecting nesting material.

A few Black Browed Albatross flying past offshore but no sign of any Sooty Shearwaters.

Arrived back home to find this male Black chinned Siskin in the Willow tree
