Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Saturday, September 22, 2007 - Falkland Steamer Duck

Out birding this morning first down to Gypsy cove to see how many Magellanic Penguins are back very disappointing to see that only 4 birds are back so far, lots of Black Chinned Siskin feeding on Tussac grass seeds as well as a few Falkland Thrush, Grass Wren, Long Tailed Meadowlark.

On the beach the female Falkland Steamer Duck spent a lot of time calling to the male without much responce as he slept on a rock just offshore.

At the pond at the back of Surf Bay there were a pair of Chiloe Wigeon along with singles of Silver Teal and Speckled Teal.

Along the shore of Stanley Harbour there are at least 12 different pairs of Falkland Steamer Ducks holding territories. The males of these pairs spend lots of time keeping rivals at bay.
