Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Thursday, September 27, 2007 - Sooty Shearwaters are Back!!!

Went out birding for a few hours this afternoon first down to Cape Pembroke for some sea watching, lots of Black Browed Albatross and Sooty shearwaters flying pass the Sooty Shearwaters have only just returned from spending the winter in the far North. Also saw Southern & Northern Giant Petrels, Rock Shags, King Cormorants and 3 Antarctic Fulmars.

Quite a few Snowy Sheathbills on the rocks at the point as well as Magellanic & Blackish Oystercatchers.

On one of the pond on the way to Cape Pembroke saw a pair of Chiloe Wigeon with a few Silver & Speckled Teal. Lots of Rufous Chested Dotterals , Falkland Pipits and Dark Faced Ground Tyrants all displaying.

On the pond at the back of Surf Bay the pair of Silvery grebe have returned as well as 20+ Patagonian Crested Ducks.

At Gypsy Cove over 50+ Magellanic Penguins are back and busy cleaning up their burrows for the return of the females, of which some are already back. They use dried tussac grass and other plant material that is around near their burrows.

Magellanic Penguin collecting dried tussac grass for the nest.

And a bit of green plant material for the misses.
