Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Thursday, December 6, 2007 - Silver Teal

Had a quick look around the some of the ponds on Cape Pembroke peninsula this evening and came across this pair of Silver Teal with 7 ducklings on one of them.

One or two Silver Teals breed on the peninsula each year but it is a long time since I have seen a pair with 7 young.

Also on the pond there was a pair of Speckled Teal with 3 ducklings.

I then went and checked on the pair of White Tufted Grebe’s on Yorke Bay pond, it looks like they have given up on their breeding attempt as they spent no time near the nest while I was watching them so went down and had a look at the nest.

There was still one egg in the nest but as it is now nearly a month since it was laid there is no hope of it hatching now.
