Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Saturday, May 24, 2008 - Tussucbirds

Went down to Cape Pembroke this morning, the weather was a lot better than it has been lately with bright sunshine and moderate north westerly winds.

Lots of birds on the southern side of the peninsula with Blackish & Magellanic Oystercatchers, 23 Rufous Chested Dotterel, Snowy Sheathbills, Speckled Teal, Crested Duck, Black Crowned Night Heron.

One of the Rufous Chested Dotterels is still showing some Summer plumage. There were up to 9 Tussucbirds on the beach at 2 more at the lighthouse which is the most I have seen on the cape.

Falkland Thrush, Falkland Pipit, Black Throated Finch & Dark Faced Ground tyrants were all seen feeding at the back of the beach on the southern side.

At the lighthouse there were 2 Peregrine Falcons and a Red Backed Hawk.

Hi. Thanks for commenting on Deep Sea News! I enjoyed these pictures. It was hard to see the oystercatchers. They blended in so well with the rocks!
