Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Saturday, June 21, 2008 - Black Necked Swans

Yesterday I had to travel to East Cove for work, on the pond that had a male Cinnamon Teal on it a couple of months ago there was a large number of Black Necked Swans but I had no time to do a count.

So today I left Stanley before first light to have a walk around the pond to get a count of the number of birds.

There was a total of 199 Black Necked Swans in two main groups of 120 & 79 below are some of the images taken.

71 of the 199 Black Necked Swans

Other birds on the pond included 8 Speckled Teal, 32 Silver Teal, 2 Yellow Billed Pintail, 4 Chiloe Wigeon, 25+ White Tufted Grebe a single Flying Steamer Duck.

On the way back to Stanley came across this male Red Backed Hawk by the roadside.

I love your photographs. Capturing wild fowl is not easy and you have some amazing shots. Thanks for sharing them!

Your pictures are really wonderful!
No doubt this is a stupid question, but how do you tell a young black necked swan from the older ones? They all look the same to me.
