Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Sunday, September 21, 2008 - White Rumped Sandpiper

Went and had a look around the ponds at Stanley Airport this morning, lots of Upland and Ruddy - Headed Geese holding territories. On most of the ponds there were ducks including Speckled Teal, Silver Teal, Chiloe Wigeon, Crested Duck & a male Flying Steamer Duck.

On one of the ponds I saw my first White Rumped Sandpiper of the spring as well as the first Magellanic Snipe for a few months.

Quite a few Falkland Pipits singing and displaying along with Rufous Chested Dotteral.

Amazing to think that that sandpiper might have been nesting up here in the Arctic just a short while ago
