Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Sunday, September 28, 2008 - Dead Southern Elephant Seal

Went out to Cape Pembroke lighthouse this morning to have a look around. On the rocky beach on the Southern side near the lighthouse came across a large long dead Southern Elephant Seal. There were a few Southern Giant Petrels at the carcass and a couple of Northern Giant Petrels just offshore.

One of the Southern Giant Petrels allowed me to approach and watch it feeding on the carcass.

Other good birds seen around Cape Pembroke included a pair of Southern Caracara, Red Backed Hawk & Peregrine Falcon.
