Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Friday, October 3, 2008 - Southern & Northern Giant Petrels

Had the afternoon of work today so headed out to Cape Pembroke to have a look at the carcass of the Southern Elephant Seal. No Giant Petrels on the carcass but lots of juvenile Southern Giant Petrel close inshore.

Further out there were a few adult Northern Giant Petrels in amongst lots more juvenile Southern Giant Petrels.

Off the point there were thousands of Antarctic Fulmars and a few Sooty Shearwaters and Black Browed Albatross. In amongst the Kelp just offshore I saw my first South American Terns and Brown Hooded Gulls of the Spring.
