Birding in the Falkland Islands

• Saturday, October 4, 2008 - Cape Dolphin for the day

Went out to Cape Dolphin today which is located in the North West of East Falkland. When we got to the house I checked to see if one of the resident Barn Owls was roosting in one of the trees, sure enough there it was just above my head.

At the Gentoo Penguin colony there were two King Penguins in moult.

My Daughter Lucianne checking her pictures of the King Penguins.

Down at the main pond there were 20+ Black Necked Swans on the water and 4 birds sitting on nests along the edge of the pond, other birds on the pond included Speckled Teal, 2 Silver Teal, 4 Yellow Billed Pintail, 10+ Chiloe Wigeon, 6 Flying Steamer Ducks & 10+ White Tufted Grebe, around the edge of the pond large flocks of White Rumped Sandpipers were feeding along with a couple of Brown Hares.

Moving onto the point to see what seabirds were moving through in the strong Westerly wind that was blowing, We saw large numbers of Antarctic Fulmar, Sooty Shearwater & Black Browed Albatross along with single Great Shearwater & White Chinned Petrel. In amongst the Tussuc Grass and on the rocks on the shore I counted 144 Southern Sea – Lions.

At the very end of the cape there were large numbers of King Cormorant, Rock Shag, Dolphin Gull & Snowy Sheathbill on the rocks.
