Brookie's Diary
• Friday, October 7, 2005 - Edderthorpe Flash
Great a day of work one which I was saving for a dash to the coast to see Leach's Petrels. With this bird in the bag on the 2nd of this month I decided to try a new place Edderthorpe Flash. Over the last few weeks Garganey and Green Winged Teal where coming on regular. So at 8am I was off arriving at 9am. It wasn't the kind of setting I was expecting viewing from a lay by with a greasy caravan as company. So I ended up viewing from the old railway banking which gives good views across the flash. There was a good number of Snipe, Lapwing and Golden Plovers about along with a 4 Dunlin, 2 Ringed Plovers and 2 Curlew Sandpipers. I started looking around the widfowl all I could find were Mallard,Pochard,Wigeon,Teal,Gadwall and Shoveler NO Green Winged Teal OR Garganey. Long Tailed and Blue Tits were fliting around in the bush's along with a charm of Goldfinch and then a singing Chiffchaff was heard. Overhead Black Headed Gulls,Cormorants and Starlings were coming into land. A motionless Grey Heron on the flash along with the suppoting cast of the usual Coots, Moorhens, Canada Goose, Mute Swans and Greylag Geese. I was interupted again by a text message LAUGHING GULL seen at Angler's Country Park. So what to do the planned Old Moor or onto Angler's. I decided on an hour at Angler's. Arriving at 11:30am the notice board said last seen flying on to Wintersett. After looking through all the gulls Lesser Black Backed, and Common Gull there was no sign of the LAUGHING GULL I headed home and maybe another day. It did come into roost that night at 5pm but I wasn't there to see it
