Brookie's Diary
• Saturday, May 17, 2008 - Scout Dyke & Blacktoft Sands

Scout Dyke Reservoir was the start point for today. On arrival warblers were in full song with Whitethroat in the background. On inspection of the scrub area around the car park a Garden warbler made its self known but soon headed back to cover. Then a Tawny Owl could be heard in the distance. Off we went adding Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe and Canada Goose. Swallows over the water with Linnets overhead and Chaffinch calling from the wood has we headed off around the reservoir. We didn't add much to the list on the way round, due to the rain now settling in. It wasn't till we got back to near the car park that we had our surprise bird in the form of a female Crossbill feeding along with a Pied Wagtail on the dam wall footpath. I departed company with my partner for the morning who had to be else where and I made off to Blacktoft Sands for my 96th visit. I started around the farmland adding Corn Bunting, Meadow Pipit, Skylark and Yellow Wagtail. Then on to Blacktoft Sands Reserve. Here I caught up with a few warblers mainly Reed Warbler but also Sedge Warbler and Whitethroat. Waders included Avocet and Black Tailed Godwits. Marsh Harrier, two males and a female with Bearded Tits "pinging" in the reeds. The sun did shine at Blacktoft which was a large improvement on the mornings weather. 68 species not a bad count for the day despite the weather we had. The days List |
