Brookie's Diary
• Friday, May 30, 2008 - Weeting Heath and Lakenheath Fen
A long awaited trip in to Norfolk with the first stop at Weeting Heath. First port of call was down to the east hide to locate the Woodlark. that had been seen there. No Stone Curlew and no Woodlark. However Spotted Flycatcher, Robin, Lapwing, Marsh Harrier were all seen from this hide. Up to west hide then to try for the Stone Curlew. Passing the reception the Woodlark had been singing from a near by tree, the usual you should have been here five minutes ago. Anyway on to the hide, here we did see Little Owl, Green Woodpecker with great views of Woodlark and eventually brief views of Stone Curlew.
We left Weeting Heath for Lakenheath Fen to try and glimpse Golden Oriole. Warblers we saw at Lakenheath Fen included Whitethroat, Garden, Grasshopper and Reed Warblers. Great views of Cuckoo were had. We left the sight for tea and to report in at the B&B we were stopping at. We returned to Lakenheath Fen to catch sight of Barn Owl hunting along the dyke area. That was the first days birding. The B&B we were stopping at is worth a mention. It is called Magdalen House in Methwold near to the brecks. Top notch B&B now moved onto my favourites list. Clean, homely with a friendly welcome. The owners were fantastic could not do enough to accommodate. Find them at www.magdalenhouse.co.uk .
