There was a downpour today. After it stopped, Zen stood on the nest for a short while and left. Meanwhile Tai stretched her wings on the treetop and preened her feathers.

I watched the Kite's hill from 5:30am. Here are the birds I saw that morning:
White-throated Kingfisher, Masked Laughingthrush, Greater Coucal, Crested Myna, Common Magpie, some white pigeons, Barn Swallow.

Zen landed on the nest at around 6am.
Later, he chased the White-throated Kingfishers away. They even attacked each other.

Tai ate a fish at her usual eating spot at 7:40am.

She finished her fish within ten minutes. She then ate the pieces of food that got spattered around while she ate the fish. Zen called from the nest.

Tai flew to another tree and defecated. Afterwards she and Zen chased other Black Kites that flew near the hill.

Finally, she returned to her eating spot and ate the remaining food.

Zen and Tai placed a piece of white sheet on another tree.

It contrasted greatly with the trees in the background. (A black kite was flying on the right)

Here's another one flapping in the wind.

A Tale of Two Kites - Chapter 10: Fire

There was a fire in a house right next to Zen and Tai's hill.

A few Black Kites gathered above the spot and soared around the rising plume of smoke.

Tai perched on the tree above her nest. She noted the fire, but didn't care. Firefighters came very soon and the fire was put out ten minutes later.

The kites above scattered away after the fire was extinguished. Tai circled the hill twice, glided over to the site of the fire, observed the site for a while, and then flew away.

A Tale of Two Kites – Chapter 9: Rat

Published by Little Dolphin the Sunday, November 25, 2007 at 6:33 PM in 3. Black Kite story 2001. 0 comments. 0 trackbacks. Permalink.

Tai caught a rat and took it up a tree. Zen followed her and perched on the same tree.

Tai ate the rat's head first.

After a few minutes, Tai flew to another shrub where she often had her meals. She made several calls while she continued to eat the rat.

Zen stood by her for a long time. He flew away several times:
‧ First, he circled above the shrub, and then flew back to her.
‧ Next, he went back to the nest, and then flew back again.
‧ He then grabbed a tree branch, put it next to Tai, and then flew away.
‧ Afterwards, he chased the White-throated Kingfishers on the hill.
‧ A while later, he landed under a big tree and preened his feathers.
‧ After preening, he soared in the sky with several other Black Kites, and chased the Kites that flew close to the hill.

Tai ate for a whole hour. She used her beak to clean her talons after eating.

After a while, Zen came back and hastily gobbled the remainder of the rat.

When they ripped the rat’s skin apart, it looked like pulling rubber bands.

Tai stayed with Zen while he ate, and then flew away. Zen followed her soon after.
