Black Kites are the common brown raptors seen soaring in the skies above Hong Kong. They are most commonly seen flying above Victoria Harbour, occasionally coming down to the sea surface to scavenge on dead fish and other carrions. They are important players in the local ecosystem by helping to remove and recycle animal remains.

Every evening, Tens of kites circle in the skies above Aberdeen Country Park on Hong Kong Island and form large roosting colonies. In winter migrant Black Kites from Northern Asia arrive in Hong Kong and join in the local colonies. The birds, which can be up to hundreds, form spectacular views as they all come together to roost in the
hills.
As a raptor (i.e. birds that hunt for food with talons), Black Kites are the top-most consumer in the food chain. They also need large territories for breeding. Hence, they are especially vulnerable to human activities.

At last I have found out what these beautiful birds are,as a regular visitor I have often wondered what kind of bird of prey they are and now I know...thanks to your site. They are so wonderful to watch soaring above and skimming the water in the harbour. They add magic and serenity to this urban sprawl,so I hope they are protected and I certainly would expect them to be.....add me to their fan list!!!
