Tuesday, May 15, 2007 - Slavonian grebe at last
Today I will try a bit of english only :)
Todays new birds: Slavonian grebe, temminck's stint, blue headed wagtail and dunlin. Also, I heard a total of five singing thrush nightingales. Bit of an invasion there i think. At my home birding spot, the Kviberg field, there are now two grasshopper warblers.
Started out in Torslandaviken at 12:30. Saw common whitethroat and reed warbler but no slavonian grebe. Went further south along the bay and found a singing common sandpiper and two linnets. Went past the sand martin colony. Still no slavonian grebe. Noted the five thrush nightingales, the blue headed wagtail, an ordinary yellow wagtail and a mallard with nine chicks. Entered the side of the dredging dump, a muddy place, very popular among wading birds. Stared into the curtain of reed, no slavonian grebe. Found not only one but eight temminck's stints, species expected, number not. Later this evening the number apparently increased to seventeen. They are on the move apparently. Also there was a dunlin in nice summer plumage. Not expected at all! Suddenly came 15:30 and i realised I was in a bit of a hurry. On top of that, virga not 500 to the south indicated big time rain coming my way. Packed up and started the 40 minute walk back to the bus stop. Saw a black little bird swimming peacefully out of the reed. Assumed that it was a coot but decided to check with the spotting scope anyway. Not a coot but a slavonian grebe! Not often is a walk in heavy rain more manageable...
Weather changing for the worse at the Torslandaviken dredging dump
sweden species list now 162. Only 38 to go this year :)

About Me
26 year old birder from Gothenburg, Sweden.
My goal for 2007 was get above 200 life-ticks. I managed 215 and the goal for 2008 was to get to 250. Right now it looks like I might get to 250 year ticks which is of course even better.
