Wednesday, May 23, 2007 - An ordinary but nice morning in Torslandaviken
We arrived at Torslandaviken about 06:45 due to heavy traffic. "The dredge" housed Shelduck with nine chicks, two Redshanks, 11 Temminck's Stints and some Ringed Plovers. Common Whitethroat, Yellow Wagtail, Linnet and Lapwing too. Nothing special, and especially no Little Stint which had probably moved on considering the nice weather.
Further north on the bay bank there were thrush nightingales and Reed warbler as expected and increasing numbers of swifts, swallows and martins. The Sand martins swarmed around their colony in hundreds and in the surrounding field was more Yellow wagtails, a Willow warbler and mating Little ringed plover. An Osprey hovered over the next bay to the east.
Coffee break and then we headed back to the dredge. Coots and Great Crested Grebes on the north side, but still no Little Stint on the south side. But a minute later we managed to spot the Slavonian Grebe, this time in the lower western corner of the reed belt. It showed itself really nice and came quite close before it's great crested cousin chased it away.
Slavonian Grebe (Podiceps auritus), Quite nice picture considering it's taken with a
handheld digital camera through a cheap spotting scope on a wobbly tripod.
We complained a bit the absence of raptors, so I scanned the opposite side just in case and lo, I found a Goshawk circling in the distance and then heading south. Nice finishing touch to an ordinary but not neccessarily dull trip.

About Me
26 year old birder from Gothenburg, Sweden.
My goal for 2007 was get above 200 life-ticks. I managed 215 and the goal for 2008 was to get to 250. Right now it looks like I might get to 250 year ticks which is of course even better.
