Birding on the west coast of Sweden

Thursday, May 24, 2007 - A bit o' city birding

Posted in Local watching
Yesterday afternoon I went to the university for a archaeology students' club board meeting, but they were already done when I came :P So I went and looked for birds around the nearby pond. Nine Mallard youngsters were roaming the playground on the "beach". The resident Moorhens were at first only heard but I caught a glimpse of them foraging in the vegetation. Also heard a Green Woodpecker and two Winter Wrens. Suddenly, the fish in the pond (probably Crucian Carps) were very active and splashed a lot. Mating maybe?

Later in the evening I went to Säveån (where the Penduline Tit hangs around). No Penduline, but Icterine Warbler, Reed Warbler, Marsh Warbler and Thrush Nightingale. And Beaver! I saw gnawed trees when I looked for the Tit the first time, but now a beaver had been seen eating just by the river. Cool!
On the way home I found a Grasshopper Warbler in a new place nearer home than before.

About Me

26 year old birder from Gothenburg, Sweden. My goal for 2007 was get above 200 life-ticks. I managed 215 and the goal for 2008 was to get to 250. Right now it looks like I might get to 250 year ticks which is of course even better.
