Hakodate Birding

Cheeky

Posted in Unspecified

Had my weekly drive around this morning to Kamiso/Onuma/Shikabe and saw a lot of the usual stuff plus a couple of interesting things. Standing on the edge of the ice at Onuma was an adult Stellers Sea Eagle. Shame it was over half a kilometer away and I won't emabrass myself by posting my photos of it on the web (though there is a nice of pic of one further down the page). This cheeky looking male Tufted Duck at Onuma was the pic of the day. My wife takes the credit for this one. We also saw a first year White Tailed Eagle perched in a roadside tree. I guess both of these birds were individuals who had wintered further south and were on their way back to Siberia for the breeding season. Other stuff of interest included a handful of Smew scattered about, a few Whooper Swans, a beautiful all white second year Glaucous Gull, a flock of Waxwing seen briefly from the car (Bohemian I think) plus the usual common stuff on the sea including Pelagic Cormorant and Red Necked Grebe (which was still in winter plumage). Not much of interest in the last week. Crappy weather. Bad week to be a armchair sports fan of Liverpool (and of England sporting teams in general). Music recommendation of the week:Frank Black's cover version of Bob Dylan's "changing of the guard". Makes driving round the streets of Hakodate more bearable.
