Hakodate Birding

A Sunday stroll

Posted in Unspecified

Had a longish walk yesterday to blow away the cobwebs. Tachi-machi Misaki is a forest clad cape/mountain about 3km away from my flat. I didn't see much on the way I'm afraid but at the cape there were a few birds on ths sea: Brent Goose, Red Breasted Merganser, Black Scoter, Wigeon and 2 types of Cormorant. I didn't have my scope and it was a bit windy so I had a look in the forest at the bottom of the mountain. The trails are still snow and icebound but a road skirting the foot of the mountain was open. Usually there are lots of noisy birds in the forest (Woodpeckers and Nuthatches mainly) but today it was eerily quiet. I hope the nasty cold spell in early winter hasn't impacted too much on the resident bird population. There were a few Siskin about as well as Varied, Marsh, Great and Coal Tits. The mild spring weather continued today and I had a quick look in Goryokaku Park. A male Yelow Throated Bunting was the pick of the birds. Otherwise just the usual Dusky Thrush, Oriental Greenfinch and Hawfinch. I have a few days off later this week so hopefully will get out and about.......maybe even see the first spring migrants returning from southern Japan. Japanese Skylark or Bull Headed Shrike are usually the first to arrive. Mid April-mid May is always the best time for birds in Hakodate. I have a trip to East Hokkaido in late May followed by the World Cup. The noisy folk upstairs appeared to have moved out.......................I like Spring.
