MigrantsSpent a short time today (the 13th) looking along the river and in the local park for migrants. The river and park have in recent years produced some pretty impressive species in spring......lots of Warblers/Flycatchers/Chats etc. Towards the end of the second week in April is usually when the first Stonechats and Red Flanked Bluetails can be seen although I didn't see either of these today I'm sorry to say. Many migrants make their way upstream into the forested hills to the north. Hakodateyama is pretty much the nearest point to Honshu so is also great in spring migration. The only migrants today of real note were a lone female Bullheaded Shrike and a flock of 17 Bohemian Waxwing.More Dusky Thrush passed through too and some were even singing (they don't nest in Japan). Varied Tit and Siskin were in the conifers at the edge of the park. The peak of migration is usually from about April 21st to around May 18th. EDITED TO ADD (14th). Took a quick look on the local river and there were several Stonechat (the Siberian subspecies) and great views of an Osprey moving upstream. Common summer visitors to all the major rivers near here it was still surprising to see on my own tiny concrete-banked river in town. I remember my first Osprey at Loch Garten in 1976. 30 years ago.......................12:18 - 14/4/2006 - post comment
