Hakodate Birding

Hazel Grouse

Posted in Unspecified

This handheld and later heavily photoshopped pic (I've reordered the small yet vital component now missing from my digiscoping set-up) is a Japanese Cormorant and an adult Glaucous Gull at Yakumo this morning. Lots of the usual Gulls and Ducks around but nothing terribly interesting except an Osprey and 21 Grey Heron. Onuma was more productive. A couple  of brief forays into the still leafless forest produced a flushed whirring Hazel Grouse, a Whites Thrush, several Russet Sparrow and lots of the commoner woodland stuff including my first rather belated singing Japanese Bush Warbler of the spring. Their well known and loud song "hohokekyo" is the signature sound of a Japanese summer. That sounds like such a cliche. Stopped at Kamiso where the 2 Black Winged Stilt from last week and yet another Osprey were on the river. 2 great games last night. It would have been pretty funny if Jol had chinned Wenger. Will Lennon go the World Cup? Glad to see Rafa shut up Jose too. Best song on the car ipod today was Lambchop's cover version of "this corrosion".
