Hakodate Birding

Ospreys and other stuff

Posted in Unspecified

This was one of many Ospreys I saw today. A nice warm spring day and lots of stuff around. I started off at Asabu. Asabu is a one horse town on the Japan sea side of South Hokkaido. It's famous for mushrooms (edible rather than trippy ones). There is a river that always looks like it SHOULD be good for birds and occasionally is. Today there were 4 Egrets...........2 were definitely Great White Egrets in breeding plumage (blue face/black bill) but the other 2 were still in winter plumage (yellow bills) but I think they weren't Intermediate Egrets (the main confusion species here). A lone Kentish Plover was the only wader and there several species of the commoner Ducks, several Ospreys, lots of Stonechat, a few Black Faced Bunting, a rather odd looking female Bunting with a brownish head that might have been a Little Bunting but probably wasn't, 4 lingering Whooper Swan, and a singing Blue Rock Thrush.

Elsewhere on the coast I saw Glaucous Winged Gull, Grey Tailed Tattler and lots of Harlequin Duck. On returning to Hakodate I went to the usual places..........at Kamiso only a few Gulls and Ducks were present but a Great Crested Grebe and Pacific Diver were on the sea. Finished the day at Tachi-machi Cape. A Rhinoceros Auklet, several Divers (2 of which were Black Throated), 11 Harlequin Duck and lots of Wigeon were bobbing around on the sea. A quick foray into the forest brought me Japanese White-eye, Sakhalin Leaf Warbler, Goldcrest, Varied Tit plus the usual common stuff.
