Hakodate Birding

Egrets about

Posted in Unspecified

This is a small offshore island to the east of Hakodate. Lots of breeding Japanese Cormorant, Slaty Backed and Black Tailed Gulls. A beautiful afternoon but not so many birds about......a couple of Intermediate Egrets just outside Hakodate being the only things of real interest.

Went to Onuma yesterday. Absolutely freezing. Singing Brown and Japanese Thrush were the highlights. Thrushes are shy creatures here (except Dusky Thrush which are dirt common). No hopping across lawns or singing from TV antennae here. Skulkers all. I did manage to see them. Eventually.

A few seaduck were still present at Kamiso. The cherry blossoms aren't open yet (a week or so late). It's a big holiday in Japan this week (Golden Week) which generally co-incides with the cherry blossoms here in South Hokkaido. Lots of locals in huge groups shiver and get drunk eating dodgy barbecued mutton under the cherry blossom trees present in many parks in town. Drove past the local park tonight. Lots of carousing but no cherry blossoms.

Hopefully get a few more migrants tommorrow.

Rooney's injury.....................................................hmmmm.
