| Hakodate Birding |
Some waders and other interesting stuffI'd planned to get up at dawn and look for migrants at Hakodateyama. I took an executive decision to have a lie-in and go to Yakumo at a more civilized hour instead (my rationale-it's a national holiday so the mountain would have been full of noisy day trippers even at dawn plus the late start to spring means next week is likely to be better). At the rivermouth at Yakumo there was a small mixed group of waders. 7 Mongolian Plover, 2 Turnstone, 1 Dunlin, 3 Grey Tailed Tattler and 1 Common Sandpiper. The regular 7 species of Gull were all around including lots of second year Glaucous. Lots of the commoner Ducks. The most interesting being Gadwall and the most numerous being Scaup and Wigeon. A Wryneck and a Great White Egret were the other noteworthy species. Returned to Hakodate via Shikabe. On the sea were more seaduck including a flock of 8 White Winged Scoter ( a lifer), a group of 7 or 8 Grebes well offshore which were either Black-necked or Slavonian (the latter I think) and a lone Red Throated Diver. On returning to Hakodate we went to Kamiso............not much around there but I took these pics (for the decent birds above the scope wasn't handy or the birds were too far away). A Black Headed Gull. Don't laugh. They're pretty exotic for Hakodate. The only hooded Gull in fact. ![]() And here's a view of Hakodateyama from across the bay at Kamiso. There were probably loads of migrants here this morning when I was fast asleep. ![]() Hope Liverpool can pip Man U for second place. I've accepted the fact that Rooney probably won't play in Germany this summer. Best song on the car ipod today-R L Burnside's "poor boy". 19:45 - 3/5/2006 - post comment
