Hakodate Birding

Migrants through the fog

Posted in Unspecified
Went up Hakodateyama this afternoon. It was cold, wet and foggy and visibilty was pretty poor. Lots of migrants around-chiefly Japanese White-eye and various Warblers. These are tricky enough in good light but in the fog it was pretty hard to ID them especially as they weren't singing or making any noise at all. Some were clearly Japanese Bush Warbler (which is very common) but this is usually a skulking bird and some of these birds weren't skulking............... others were clearly Sakhalin Leaf Warbler ( a brownish Willow Warbler type) and at least 1 was Eastern Crowned Willow Warbler (the only one singing). Seriously the light was so bad I couldn't even tell for sure if most of the birds were green or brown. And some had clear wingbars. Which according to my photographic fieldguide........................anyway there were loads of Warblers. Otherwise not much else of interest around. A male Brown Thrush, the usual selection of resident woodland species, some singing Japanese Thrush and a few unidentified things flitting in and out of the mist. Down at the fishing harbour a lone Turnstone was a first for Hakodate, my 158th local patch bird. No pics possible today.

Warblers

Hi again!

"Sendai Mushikui" is Eastern Crowned Willow Warbler in English. I saw one near my apartment yesterday...together with the Sakhalin Leaf Warbler nearby ("Ezo Mushikui").................
