Hakodate Birding

Egrets and Shearwaters

Posted in Unspecified

This blurry out of focus Little Egret was 1 of 2 Egret species on the Menagawa River this afternoon (the other being Intermediate Egret). Today was a real mix of winter and summer. 7 types of Gull including winter staples like Glaucous and Glaucous-winged, Scaup and Merganser still on the sea and there was even a small flock of Brent Goose just outside Hakodate. Returnees from the south included Little Ringed Plover, Chestnut Eared Bunting and Oriental Great Reed Warbler (the noisiest songster in summer and common on every riverside in the area). Other stuff today included Narcissus Flycatcher, Pheasant, Bullheaded Shrike and Japanese Wagtail and a singing Oriental Cuckoo.

Just off Menagawa there were thousands of birds about a kilometre offshore. A mix of Gulls and Shearwaters. Too far away for my mid-range scope/budget eyepiece to handle I'm afraid. Some were clearly Streaked Shearwater (the commonest and easiest to ID) but the darker ones could have been one of 3 kinds (Sooty, Short-tailed or Flesh-footed). Seabirds aren't my strong point anyway. In a couple of weeks the Red Necked Pharalope migration will be in full swing in the same place......................

Nearer home I saw both Sakhalin Leaf and Eastern Crowned Warbler near my place yesterday evening.

End of the Premiership season tonight. Always a bit depressing. Thank the lord for the World Cup.
