Hakodate Birding

Found some Pharalopes

Posted in Unspecified

Not a very good pic I know but these were some of the thousands of Pharalopes offshore this morning just to the east of Hakodate. Groups of several hundred birds were spread along the coast for about 20km. These were the closest inshore (about 300 metres).

Had a productive early morning walk in the forest at the foot of Hakodateyama. Lots of common stuff including some very tame Japanese White-eye, Coal Tits and Nuthatches. My 3 target species this morning  were Blue and White Flycatcher (numerous with several singing males), Stubtailed Bush Warbler (several individuals seen skulking in the dwarf bamboo) and Siberian Blue Robin (heard at least 2 singing males). An Eye Browed Thrush was in the trees at the side of the road and afforded good views (usually I only see them disappearing into the green).

At Cape Tachi-machi there were lots of Rhinoceros Auklet offshore, singing Blue Rock Thrush and Siberian Meadow Bunting and noisy groups of migrating Brown Eared Bulbul that were providing early morning exercise for the resident Peregrines.

Just found out that  the World Cup is NOT on live on the satellite system I own. Only delayed coverage. 24 hours delayed. Some games are on regular Japanese TV. But I don't know exactly which games yet. Looks like another satellite dish is going up on the balcony.
