Hakodate Birding

Stilt and Sparrows

Posted in Unspecified

Went to Onuma this afternoon and was surprised to see another Black Winged Stilt. It was looking a bit confused by the lakeside next to Onuma Campsite.

It struck some nice poses anyway. The other most noticeable bird at the campsite was Russet Sparrow. Loads of them. Everywhere. Marsh Tits, Nuthatch and Oriental Cuckoo were also present at the campsite. I've camped there several times before. I'd forgotten how bad the mosquitoes were. Today was pretty warm (the first short sleeves weather of the year) and the little bast#*ds were out in force.

Sorry if the pics are getting repetitive. Elsewhere around the lake I saw Japanese Green Pigeon, Little Grebe, Great White Egret, Grey Heron and several Blue and White Flycatcher.

The last of the pics. Earlier in the afternoon we dropped by Kamiso. The last reminders of winter were there. A lone Brent Goose, a Pelagic Cormorant, 2 Wigeon and a few Black Headed Gull were hanging on with the handful of resident species like Spot Billed Duck, Japanese Cormorant, Black Tailed and Slaty Backed Gulls.............

Good luck to Arsenal in Paris tonight. I used to live in Highbury way back in the early 90's back in the days when Tony Adams was still drinking and Paul Merson was up to all sorts. Didn't stop them being boring on the pitch though. I lived above a greasy spoon cafe run by a Greek Cypriot called Alex. I used to drink in the Highbury Barn on occasion. Like the old stadium all these are either gone or changed beyond recognition..............
