Caspian Tern interrupts World Cup![]() Another Black Browed Reeed Warbler at Asabu this morning. A nice warm summery day after 2 weeks of wet chilly weather. Not that I've noticed the weather much. I'm suffering from worldcuplag...............too many late nights spent watching the action from Germany. But I did manage a trip to Asabu. A Caspian Ten was bird of the day (and I think this may be quite a rarity up here). A large red-billed Tern with no tail streamers. I've seen this species before in Australia and today's bird didn't seem as big as I remember. But there really isn't another Tern it could be. Definitely bigger and chunkier than a"Comic" Tern. No pic of course ( pics of flying birds are impossible with my set-up) hence the Warbler above. Also present were the usual singing species: Reed, Chestnut-eared and Black-faced Buntings, Oriental and Black Browed Reed Warblers, Stonechat, Japanese Skylark and Common Cuckoo. Also a few Herons and a lone male Pintail. On the way to Asabu I saw a couple of Oriental Honey Buzzards. Not much birding at all in Hakodate recently. Near my house there was 1 singing Chestnut-eared Bunting and 8-10 singing Oriental Great Reed Warblers on the river. There are even more at Yunokawa as well as Latham's Snipe and the usual common species. I won't mention England's performances (don't want to jinx them you see). Last night's games (in group E) were fantastic. Japan are trying to rescue their tournament tonight, Brazil are playing and after that Korea will try to humiliate les frogs. And it's all on TV. Life isn't so bad. Had a really rather nasty ice cream flavour today. Wasabi. Yuk. 19:59 - 18/6/2006 - post comment
