Summer plumage Diver A summer plumage Black Throated Diver on the river at Kamiso this afternoon. This species is very similar to the Pacific Diver but the white spot just above the waterline is supposed to be diagnostic. I actually saw this species on the same river in spring. Maybe this is even the same individual. Makes a change seeing it a) close and b) in temperatures of over 30 celsius. Usually I see them in winter offshore in freezing weather bobbing up and down on the rough sea. Not much else around here. 4 or 5 Goosander, a few Temincks Cormorant and a few Black Headed Gulls. Yesterday I took a spin around some of the sites in Hakodate. Chestnut Eared Bunting, Oriental Turtle Dove, Grey Starling and the usual summer stuff were at Yunokawa. 2 days ago at Yakumo I was looking for waders but only Common Sandpiper were present as well as Peregrine, Scaup, Sand Martin, Stonechat, Black Browed Reed Warbler and Common Kingfisher. Nothing at Onuma except a Cormorant. Temincks is the common large Cormorant in Hokkaido but as far as I know is only found in saltwater. This one was well inland on freshwater. I've seen Cormorants on Onuma lake a few times and have wondered if they were Great Cormorants (the same one as in the UK) but to be honest I'm not sure how to tell non-breeding individuals apart. A few Oriental Honey Buzzard near Asabu a couple of weeks ago were the only other notable species since my last entry.  02:13 - 25/8/2006 - post comment
