Hakodate Birding

A Big Moth

Posted in Unspecified

It's been raining all day. This is a big Moth on the stairwell in my appartment bulding. Dunno which kind. It looks like an autumn leaf though. There's another kind that looks like birds#*t but I couldn't find that one today. Actually there are lots of big Moths in Hokkaido. One tried to drink my beer on a camping trip several years ago. Needless to say it didn't live long afterwards.

Birds? A few Wigeon and Goosander at Kamiso this afternoon. The last few days has seen a few migrants passing through Hakodate. Bullheaded Shrike, Hawfinch and Japanese Wagtail and various common Buntings (Blackfaced mainly) were some of the short distance migrants. Birds off on their winter hols have included Arctic Warbler and other unidentifiable juvenile phylloscopus Warblers, the last few Red Cheeked Starling and Asian House Martin and various sundry little dull coloured birds flitting around in the bushes (these are invariably Japanese Bush Warblers or the aforementioned Buntings). Usually there are quite a few Flycatchers in September (mainly Asian Brown and Sooty) but these seem to have passed me by this year.

We noticed a few jumping Salmon at Yakumo last weekend so it looks like the Salmon runs will be starting soon.

I'm trying to sell one of my Scopes on e-bay. It's proving to be a slightly stressful experience. Why does no-one want to buy it yet?!?

Japan has a new Prime Minister. Did anyone notice?
