| Hakodate Birding |
Autumn Migration in northern Japan I was on the top of Hakodate-yama this morning to watch the sunrise and here's the picture to prove it. It was well worth the early rise too. LOTS of birds on the move. Thousands of Japanese White-Eye and hundreds of Japanese Grosbeak were the most conspicious. Also lots of Asian House Martin and a few Pacific Swift. At least 4 species of Thrush-Dusky, Pale, Eye Browed and Japanese (Grey) Thrush. These were pretty sneaky and difficult to see. Bird of the morning was a a male Siberian Rubythroat. Raptors included Hen Harrier, Peregrine and the tiny Japanese Sparrowhawk. Stonechat, Japanese Green Pigeon, Blackfaced Bunting and Japanese Bush Warbler were other migrants on the move. A few of the commoner resident species included Nuthatch and Marsh Tit.  We went to Onuma in the afternoon. Here's a Turtle. Not so many birds about here. Greyheaded Woodpecker was the pick. A few Grebes on the water-Little and Slavonian I think. The Autumn colours are beginning to show.  Finished up at Kamiso. Duck passage is well underway-lots of Pintail and quite a few Wigeon and Teal too. Last autumn I got an American Wigeon in amongst all the eclipse wildfowl but nothing so interesting today. A female Goshawk sunning itself on a roof in town a few days ago was the best bird near my house in the last week or so. Next up should be the Salmon runs on some of the local rivers. I've seen a few in the last couple of weeks. Hopefully Liverpool can sort a few things out over the international break, England will do more than just the bare minimum against Macedonia and someone will bid obscene amounts for my old scope on e-bay. 20:43 - 4/10/2006 - post comment
