Hakodate Birding

Whitefront and rain

Posted in Unspecified

A not terribly good pic of an immature White Fronted Goose at Kamiso yesterday. Another personal first for Hakodate. I'm sure this individual was on its way south but got delayed by the awful weather we've been having this week-it's been raining pretty much non-stop for about 3 days. A few other interesting species at Kamiso included Black Throated Diver, Great White Egret and 11 species of Duck including a female Smew.

In the afternoon we went to Onuma in a halfhearted attempt to find Black Woodpecker. I've seen this bird in northern Hokkaido and in Bavaria but not around here yet. It wasn't to be although I did see 3 other kinds of Woodpecker (Greater Spotted, Greyheaded and Japanese Pygmy) and lots of the commoner woodland species (basically the same as in the UK-Treecreepers, Nuthatches, paridae etc). Slavonian Grebe and the first of this winter's Whooper Swans were on the lake as well as another Great White Egret here too.

Nearer to home there have been some Rustic Bunting and Hawfinch close to the appartment. The rain continued today but I popped out briefly and saw an adult Black Crowned Night Heron standing motionless in the rain and thunder. Would have made a nice pic. If I'd had my camera. And Scope. And if it hadn't been so dark. And raining.

Some people haven't been able toÊ access this blog. Surfbirds seems to have been down a lot recently. Not that there are thousands of people hanging on my every word of course but hey.
