Hakodate Birding

Early Winter in South Hokkaido

Posted in Unspecified

Tons of snow here in Hakodate and some pretty frigid temperatures too. I had a brief look at 2 of the fishing harbours in town this morning. There were about 30 Brent Goose (see attached photo) but not much on the sea except a few Pelagic Cormorants and Harlequin Duck. Lots of gulls around including 1 adult Glaucous Winged and 1 2nd Winter Glaucous Gull. Near my apartment passerines seem to have all but disappeared. A lone Hawfinch and a few Dusky Thrush were all that was around. Yesterday was bitterly cold but produced 2 Brown Dipper, 1 of which was actually singing. Elsewhere on the river (in Yunokawa) there were 3 Goldeneye and a few cold tired looking Slaty Backed Gulls. On Tuesday I went to Yakumo to see the Eagles. Poor weather meant the Eagles were sitting out the blizzards in the trees near to the river (which surprisingly still held some live Salmon). I could see about 30 Stellers Sea Eagle (mainly adults) and about 20 White tailed Sea Eagle. I've attached a slightly lame digiscoped photo. Not much else on the river except Brown Dipper, Japanese Wagtail and a few Whooper Swan. Lots of birds on the sea mind you-mainly Greater Scaup but a good collection of other common ducks as well as 7 species of Gull (lots of Glaucous) and somewhat surprisingly a few small groups of Black Legged Kittiwake.
